Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that are placed over damaged teeth. These crowns are protective pieces that enhance the tooth’s function and form. By getting dental crowns, you can improve your quality of life. Dental crowns restore confidence in your smile at the same time that it ensures that you can enjoy your meals without worry about chewing.
At Astoria Dental, our diligent and professional staff will take good care of your dental health. They’ll assess your dental history and your current needs. From there, if you’re deemed to be a good candidate for a dental crown procedure, we begin the process.
- First, we’ll apply a bit of enamel to your existing tooth to give it the proper shape. The enamel will then be filed down so that the crown can fit over the tooth.
- We then place a temporary crown over the tooth. This protects the tooth while the permanent crown is being made in a specialized laboratory. The laboratory typically takes 1-2 weeks to create and ship the permanent crown to our clinic.
- Once we receive your custom-made permanent crown, you’ll come back for a fitting.

The temporary crown (usually made of acrylic) will be carefully removed and the existing tooth will be carefully re-assessed. After expert assessment, the customized crown is securely cemented into place, completely covering the tooth and giving the look and feel of a sturdy and perfected version of the tooth it is covering.
Crowns are strong and can last decades
Many people choose to have crowns crafted for them to improve the appearance of their teeth. However, that’s not the only reason to get crowns. There may be structural dental issues for which crowns are the only solution.
Examples of such problems are
- When a tooth is heavily damaged, such as being chipped. In this case, a crown would be placed on top of the damaged tooth. Without the crown, there could be a gap between
teeth, which might cause your teeth to shift. The crown helps hold the tooth in place, which prevents shifting. It also prevents bacteria from entering into the gums. - A crown is often needed after a root canal. Teeth can be sensitive after a root canal, so installing a crown helps prevent further decay.
The cost of a dental crown varies depending on the patient’s needs and insurance.
